Significant History

Fort Worden, along with the heavy batteries of Fort Flagler and Fort Casey, once guarded nautical entrance to Puget Sound. These posts, established in the late 1890s, became the first line of a fortification system designed to prevent a hostile fleet from reaching such targets as the Bremerton Naval Yard and the cities of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett. Construction began in 1897 and continued in one form or another until the fort was closed in 1953. The property was purchased as a state park in 1955. Fort Worden is named after Rear Admiral John L. Worden.

Notable Buildings

Fort Worden is a full-service conference center, an ideal setting for business seminars, professional conferences, corporate or agency planning sessions, church retreats, and family reunions. The park's location is free from urban distractions and interruptions. Historic 100-year-old Victorian-style parlors, spacious carpeted dormitories and hookup campsites can meet the needs of just about any small or large conference group. A wide selection of meeting rooms can accommodate groups as small as 10 or as large as 300 or more. The park's dining facilities are open year-round. There is also a large pavilion which seats an audience of over 1200, which can host a variety of events.

Fort Worden State Park has a pleasantly informal atmosphere in a historically formal setting. With facilities like these, imagine the kind of vacation or conference you could create at Fort Worden State Park.

Interpretive Oportunities

The Coast Artillery Museum was established to preserve and interpret Coast Artillery history with special emphasis on the Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound as they existed and functioned from the late 1800s to the end of World War II. Among the collections and artifacts visitors will see a recently completed three-dimensional scale model of Battery Kinzie, showing the design and structure of the massive fortifications, and the emplacements for the two 12-inch disappearing guns that were kept in readiness for possible attack from 1910 to 1943. The museum is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with extended hours (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August.

Commanding Officer's Quarters overlooks Admiralty Inlet with the Cascades in the background. Completed in 1904, thirty-three different families called this place home during the days of the fort. The building has been restored and furnished in keeping with the late Victorian period (1890 - 1910), providing a glimpse into the life of an officer and his family in the first decade of this century.
Special tours can be arranged by calling (360) 344-4400. Admission $2 for adults: free for children under 12. Hours vary.

Rothschild House is open May 1 through Sept 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

The Marine Science Center is open April 1 through Oct. 31. Hours vary.

Numerous day-use picnic tables and fireboxes provide the excellent picnic spot. The Cable House Canteen is an on-site food and convenience store, offering sundries, delicious burgers or hot breakfast entrées.

Ranging from elegant Victorian homes built before World War I for military officers and their families, to a castle and a cottage with breath-taking views, to the original barracks for the enlisted men, now remodeled for the comfort and convenience of modern guests, something is sure to satisfy the needs of your family or conference.

Being nearly a century old, the facilities have a strong rustic charm all their own, with the imperfections of age blending with the comforts of today. Hot water radiators still warm many of the rooms; modern computers run century-old boilers; and if you look closely, some of the ancient glass in the windows has waves. These all add to the Fort Worden experience.

Fort Worden State Park has sleeping accommodations for over 600 people, including dormitories and houses. Some of the units are fully accessible to visitors with physical challenges. In addition, over 80 campsites are available for use.
